Canada Launches New Pilot Program to Attract French-Speaking International Students

by

On August 14, 2024, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced the exciting launch of the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot (FMCSP) program.

Set to commence on August 26, 2024, in collaboration with designated French-language and bilingual post-secondary institutions, this initiative opens doors for prospective French-speaking students from 33 countries.

Who’s Eligible?

The program specifically targets members of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) residing in Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. These students must intend to pursue full-time studies in French as the primary language of instruction at a post-secondary level for a minimum of two years, culminating in a degree or diploma.

Unparalleled Benefits for Students:

Simplified Application: Under the FMCSP, students and their families are exempt from demonstrating their intent to leave Canada after their studies, streamlining the application process.
Reduced Financial Burden: The program adjusts the financial threshold to 75% of the low-income cut-off for the institution’s location, offering students significant economic advantages.
Direct Pathway to Permanent Residency: A unique feature of the FMCSP is the opportunity to transition directly from temporary to permanent status upon graduation.
Settlement Support: Students will have access to settlement services during their studies, facilitating successful integration into their new communities.

Important Considerations:

Application Cap: The FMCSP is not subject to the general study permit application cap.
Limited Intake: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept 2,300 applications for the first year (until August 2025).
